The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) in Canterbury has launched a pilot initiative to get local youth into employment.
The electronic Employers’ Profiling Newsletter was sent out in August to a number of North Canterbury business operators by the MSD Employer Services team, Canterbury. The newsletter features four North Canterbury jobseekers aged under 25 and profiles their skills, strengths and qualifications for potential employers.
Jo Aldridge, Regional Labour Market Manager for MSD (pictured, left) says, “The newsletter was established as an online tool to aid local employers who are planning to recruit local trainees. It is a refreshing, easy way for local youth candidates to catch the eye of local businesses and seek out employment opportunities.”
The newsletter also contains information on wage subsidies available to employers who take on the youth candidates. These include the Flexiwage subsidy and funding towards outsourced training.
“MSD is hoping local employers will take up the opportunity to engage with youth in their own communities and offer paid and sustainable employment opportunities,” says Aldridge.
“The economic growth in North Canterbury is high, so we are expecting all four candidates from this first issue to be placed locally.”
There are currently around 100 youth aged under 25 registered with MSD in North Canterbury, seeking fulltime employment. Their skills, qualifications and experience range in industries including hospitality, customer service, agriculture and building.
