Waimakariri District is one of the fastest growing Districts in New Zealand and situated only 20 minutes north of Christchurch. The Waimakariri District Council are looking for a new Governance Team Leader with the ability to work effectively with elected members and be a hands-on leader of a small team dealing with a wide range of local issues.

The successful applicant will lead a motivated team of Governance Advisors and Support Officers, working primarily with our four Community Boards. However, work can encompass Council, Committees and Hearings related advice and minute taking. This role will suit you if you thrive in situations where it is necessary to deal with the unexpected, to manage sensitive or contentious matters as well as conflicting demands, all while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality. Sound judgement, flexibility and personal resilience are therefore a must.

To be successful in this position you will need the ability to demonstrate relevant experience in Local/Central Government or Board Governance. The ability to demonstrate critical thinking, relationship management and team work is a must. A strong understanding and pragmatic approach to legislation, particularly LGOIMA, LGA and LEA would be an advantage as would a working knowledge of Standing Orders and being a competent minute-taker.

Applicants will be well organised with the ability to prioritise work in order to achieve timely outcomes on tight timeframes, an eye for detail, with fabulous communication and writing skills using their experience to help elected members make the best decisions for their community. This position involves being the primary contact for one Community Board and having an overview of three other Community Boards; providing on-going training and support to elected members and staff and ensuring all information and processes are adhered to in a timely manner. This Rangiora based position is full time, 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. In addition, you will required to attend one to two monthly meetings after normal business hours ie evenings up to approximately 10pm and flexible hours on these days would be negotiated with the successful candidate.
