2.I.C Team Leader

The Second in charge is responsible for offering a support role to the Team Leader and will be required to cover for the Team Leader when deemed necessary. This role will help to oversee the day to day running of the team, equipment and vehicles. This is a physically demanding role requiring a high level of fitness and there is the requirement to be confident when working on steep ground or at height.

Tasks will include:

  • Identify different plant species 
  • Correctly choose the appropriate species for the terrain and conditions
  • De-flasking of plants (removing of pots from the root bulb) 
  • Planting plants with the correct cultivation techniques for the species being handled 
  • The correct depth for planting is used
  • Checking the correct fertilization for every plant as specified by your supervisor.
  • You will be planting in all types of soils, terrain and weather 
  • Staking of individual plants may be involved
  • Release spraying or weed eradication by use of chemical and manual removal
  • Seeding of seedlings for the following planting season
  • Weeding of the nursery
  • Spreading of mulch by hand or help of an excavator
  • Watering of plants to maintenance standards
  • Pinus Radiata Forest Planting
  • May involve animal pest control
  • Correct handling techniques are being used at all times

 Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • The ability and willingness to lead a team
  • Experience supporting a manager or leader in all employment matters
  • Punctual and honest
  • Experience of Silverculture and forestry
  • Experience with Native plant habitats
  • Ability to identify NZ native plants 
  • Be honest, respectful, team player and hardworking
  • Physically fit
  • Head for heights
  • Career orientated and willing to learn
  • Able to be work away for periods of up to 3 weeks at a time
  • First Aid
  • Growsafe
  • Construct safe T1 or similar
  • Full Drivers Licence
  • UTV/ATV certificates

Please note that this position will require some travel. Times away could be up to 3 weeks.
