The August round of the Waimakariri Event Fund has opened, with local event organisers encouraged to apply for up to $5,000 towards the cost of their event.
The Waimakariri Event Fund is a contestable fund that is provided by the Waimakariri District Council, managed by Enterprise North Canterbury (ENC) and administered by Visit Waimakariri. Applications open for the months of March and August each year, with a total annual funding pool of $30,000 per year. However, funding has increased for this latest round.
ENC Chief Executive Heather Warwick explains, “This year the pool has increased to $50,000 due to unallocated funding last year. We are seeking applications this year for new events and also from the existing events who were not able to run their event in 2020 due to Covid-19. We want to see these events remain and be reinvigorated for our residents and visitors.”
Applicants may receive between $500 and $5,000 per event to go towards the cost of event coordination or event promotion. Funding is at the discretion of the funding panel and is allocated to support events that clearly demonstrate economic and/or community benefit to the Waimakariri District.
Visit Waimakariri Events & Promotion Administrator Lucy Harvey says supporting the events sector and attracting people to the region through vibrant local events is more important than ever before.
“So many events were cancelled or postponed during lockdown and our local businesses are also beginning to grapple with fewer international visitors. We hope that a calendar of exciting and unique local events will bring more domestic visitors to experience our beautiful region and boost the local economy,” Lucy said.
“The purpose of the Waimakariri Event Fund is to support and encourage local communities, groups and event organisers to create and present a diverse array of events that will serve the local residents and attract visitors to the district.”
Lucy explains that the idea is to support events in getting off the ground and that after three years of seed funding from the Waimakariri Event Fund, an event should be self-funding if it is to be sustainable.
Past recipients represent a wide variety of event types including the Rangiora Colour Festival, which is returning in September, Eats and Beats, Kaiapoi Art Expo, the Bridge to Bridge race, OxMan and the Pegasus Bay Art Show.
