The Waimakariri District is home to hundreds of events every year. Not only do they bring a vibrancy and excitement to the district, they also bring considerable benefits for the local economy when they stay and play in our beautiful district. For this reason the Waimakariri Event Fund provides funding to help suitable events grow.

A recent recipient of event funding has been the House of Travel Triathlon Festival, a popular annual event that draws athletes from all over New Zealand. This increasingly popular sporting event has been running since 2010 and carried on through the earthquakes, it is now the biggest triathlon in the region. It is run over a spectator friendly course at Pegasus with a festival atmosphere that makes it ideal for businesses and families to set up their own social area.

“The focus is very much on offering something for everyone,” says organiser John Newsom. “We have kids racing to elite and for those that want to dip their toes in the water there are team options, try a tri beginner events and a duathlon (run/bike/run) for those that don’t like swimming”.

The event, held in November, currently attracts around 400 participants from as far afield as Nelson and Southland. But it’s set to grow. This year it is included as the first round of the national junior series and Newsom has further ambitions for it.

“We would like to see our overall numbers building to around 600 participants and have the event as a national championship in the coming years,” he says.
