A new brewpub is in the pipeline for Kaiapoi, with Christchurch-based Eagle Brewing confirming their shift to North Canterbury.

Owner and head brewer David Gaughan, who currently operates a microbrewery and fillery in Riccarton, has been planning a brewpub since starting Eagle Brewing in 2010 but has never found the right location. Cue the riverside site on the corner of Williams and Charles Streets in Kaiapoi. “The site in Kaiapoi stole our hearts,” says David, after passing it by chance earlier this year with his partner Marilyn Yosores. “We envisaged our dream facility right there on the river with the sun shining and the beers flowing, whilst boats glided up and down the river with families enjoying their weekends together.”

Owned by PLC Group, the former Hansen’s Mall site is earmarked to become a new retail and hospitality destination and will form part of the Waimakariri District Council’s Kaiapoi Marine Precinct. Work is expected to start on the site before Christmas, with David and Marilyn confirming their plans to open an on-site brewery and bar “which integrates into the working space of the brewery” before the end of next year.

“We will have a big emphasis on keeping things local, like our ingredients for the beers and also the food and wines we will serve,” explains David.

“We will be making Kaiapoi our home - moving there before the business opens. We want to be part of the community and part of the regeneration of the town. And we want the community to be a big part of us too."

In late November, Eagle Brewing will be hosting a crowd-funding information evening for anyone interested in investing in the development.

“We will be inviting investors (small and large) to share in our future, with an option to buy shares in our venture,” says David.
