Industry Taster/Career Open Days
These educational visits aim to raise the awareness of the number of job and career opportunities available in North Canterbury. ENC works with the local businesses and high schools to determine which industries would be of most interest and importance to the region and then makes the necessary arrangements.
Industry Taster/Careers Open Days held in 2009:
Land Based Careers Day Out - were held with Hurunui College and Rangiora High School to find out more about the careers available for students interested in working on the land. Supporting businesses included Harris Meats, Heasley Fencing, Brand Logging and NZ Vineyard Estates Ltd/Mud House Winery.
An introduction to Heller Tasty was made with Rangiora New Life School and Kaiapoi High School to demonstrate the variety of jobs available with this large employer in Kaiapoi.
The Hanmer Springs Careers Open Day was held in June and attended by Hurunui College and Amuri Area School students to found out about the range of careers available within different businesses/industries in Hanmer Springs. Industries included hospitality, tourism, adventure tourism and surveying. A number of Amuri Area School students have gone onto do work experience, gateway placements and in some cases work part-time with several of the supporting businesses.
The Waimakariri District Council Careers Open Day was held in May 2009 and was attended by Rangiora New Life and Kaiapoi High School students to find out more about the professional career opportunities available within the Council. A number of Rangiora New Life students went on to do work experience with the Planning, Library and IT departments and found out whether they wanted to study further in these areas or look elsewhere.
