Gateway Programme

What is Gateway?

The Gateway Programme is designed to strengthen the pathway for students from school to workplace learning.

Gateway differs from work experience positions as the student has specific tasks to learn and be assessed on, whereas work experience positions provide a “taster” experience for students to identify a possible industry of interest to them.

Enterprise North Canterbury supports the Gateway Programme assisting with business contacts and visits to local worksites. Gateway is one programme in the North Canterbury area addressing the employment skills needs of local business.

For more information on the Gateway Programme and how each of the schools are involved, click here

Different Perspectives

The Gateway programme means different things to different people, we spent some time talking to some of the businesses, students and schools about what the programme means to them:

Businesses

Many of our local businesses are working closely with the high schools and offering Gateway placements to students.  Click on the link to find out more about their experience:

Seagars Cook School and Cafe

Heritage Hotel - Hanmer Springs

Oxford Community Trust

If you are a business in North Canterbury who has had a Gateway Student working in your business and would like to share this, please contact us for more information.

Students

The students from all of the schools are keen to participate in the gateway programme and get some real experience whilst continuing to achieve their NCEA credits.  Click on the link to find out more about their experience:

Grace Stewart was placed at Seagars Cook School and Cafe

Maegan Bang and Michelle Ham were placed at Heritage Hotel - Hanmer Springs

Lauren Whittle was placed at Oxford Community Trust

Schools

Gateway enhances the process of schools supplying businesses with future employees and employers are able to target these prospective employees far earlier assisting in alleviating local skill shortages.
