Interesting fact ...

The region has two separate water schemes which between them cover 80,000 hectares of land in the North Canterbury region.

That's quite a lot of land to cover!

Our Infrastructure

Waimakariri Irrigation Ltd has developed an irrigation scheme drawing water from the Waimakariri River, North Canterbury, and distributing this water through races between that river and the Ashley River.
The Company's Resource Consents include the right to "Take" 10.5 cumecs of water from the river and to irrigate 18,000 hectares of farmland within a command area of approximately 40,000 hectares.

Water

Water is the life blood to many communities and industries in North Canterbury, whether it be for town or stock water supplies, or for irrigating crops and pastures.  Water also has a high environmental value.

With the expansion of both people and businesses across the district, water is becoming a very precious resource, which at times especially during the long, hot summer months is in very short supply. In contrast there is often excess water (and floods) in winter.

Both districts in the region have projects dedicated to water supply and demand issues.
