Roading Information
Roading across North Canterbury
Overall there are over 2800 kms of roads that span the North Canterbury Region;
Hurunui District Council state that they have responsibility for 1414 km of roads and Waimakariri District Council state that they have responsibilty for 1422 km of roads.
To seal or not to seal ...
There are both tar sealed road and unsealed (gravel) roads around the region. Some roads are sealed at the junction with another road and then unsealed further along the road. Extra care should be taken when driving these gravel roads as accidents can easily occur if you are not used to driving on them! All the major roads around the region are sealed, however if you are travelling "off the beaten track" be prepared to encounter them.
Hurunui district has more than half of its roads unsealed whereas in Waimakariri it is fairly evenly split.
