Cheviot is a vibrant rural township located on SH1, between Christchurch and Kaikoura in the Hurunui District.

Established in the 1800s, Cheviot has always been a service town to the surrounding sheep farms. Whilst once comprising little more than a post office, Cheviot now boasts a collection of delightful eateries, key services and an Area School. The town is a popular stop-off for those travelling between Christchurch and Kaikoura, as well as those heading east to visit the coastal settlement of Gore Bay.

Pastoral farming makes up the majority of employment in the Cheviot area, but the school, retail and hospitality businesses also provide employment opportunities.

Cheviot is the largest town in the Parnassus statistical area, servicing the nearby settlements of Domett, Parnassus, Gore Bay and Spotswood.
